Ask HN: Advice on getting back on the job market?
Could anyone offer any advice on how I can get my career back on track after a year-long hiatus?
I spent the bulk of last year bedridden due to a pretty severe illness, and it's beginning to dawn on me that this situation had struck at an incredibly inopportune period in my life, career-wise, since I had to leave college and had only completed one internship by that point. Fortunately I've been well since I came out of recovery earlier this year and am working to "get back in the game", so I've been sending my resume to various companies and replying to job posts, but I'm not getting any replies and I don't even know if my resume is making it passed the HR filters.
I've considered going back to finish college but it's just not in the cards for me financially after last year, and I've been managing alright improving my skills privately, so it's hard to justify the financial load.
If anyone has faced similar circumstances or has any advice on how best to surmount this barrier, I'd really appreciate it. I've revised my resume so many times at this point, I'm starting to lose perspective.
I'm posting anon because of the somewhat personal nature of the situation, but I'd be happy to send my resume privately to anyone kind enough to offer critique and such; just let me know
Thanks in advance!
