Comparing things we understand to something we do not, like putting a little man next to the drawing of a dinosaur.

Aren’t you surprised how huge Africa is?

ugh beat me to it... to me a good infographic is also one that compares something "unknown" to known quantities for the readers

In this case it's "well-known" or relevant countries for the Western world, compared to the "unknown" size of Africa.
