This article discusses a separate software attack. My intuition is that the "17 sources" are just unfortunate national security officials on the receiving end of an increasingly paranoid game of telephone where various traditional attacks somehow turned into a supply chain attack executed via magical rice chips. This explains both Bloomberg's confidence in their own story and the staunch denials from Apple and Amazon.
