I'm not by any stretch an expert in VR/AR, but a couple of weeks ago I finally tried Magic Leap.

My first reaction was: "What a piece of crap!! This is it?"

And yes... that it was. If you have never tried it, is 100X (and I'm being generous) less impressive than the super fake demo video they posted.

That was pretty much my experience with HoloLens. Uncomfortable headset, awkward and inaccurate hand gestures, and like a postage-stamp-size viewport. You couldn't see anything functional in the least due to viewport alone, and the low resolution killed any hope you may have had left. Tracking was mostly alright about 95% of the time, in an office setting which is probably borderline ideal (lots of high-contrast edges and corners all over), but even while relatively still it made plenty of mistakes.

All of which I gather the Magic Leap is better on... by less than 50%. In two years.

AR has unbelievably misleading advertising. To enough of a degree that I think they should be fined rather significantly. Remember the HoloLens Minecraft "demo" videos? Or the full 3D models on the user's desk, nearly the size of the screen or keyboard? You couldn't even cover a coffee mug at that distance.

I was still somewhat impressed exactly by the HoloLenses very fast (and quite accurate) tracking. I think it was the absolutely right trade-off.
Yeah, most of the time it was very solid, only barely perceptible lag. Fairly impressive when it was working smoothly :)

Issues I had were mostly when it failed and started sliding around while I stood still, or jumped a bit and stayed wrong for a couple seconds.

The technology hype cycle over the last decade has been pretty disappointing. I was promised by now, I'd be 3D printing my sneakers, spend my time killing zombies in VR, and paying for DLC with crypto

Of these, only VR seems even remotely close to reaching its original promise

Baker Hughes GE has an awesome Hololens demo where they offload the processing to a GPU rack and get some insane voxels, resolutions and responsiveness.

But yeah the onboard stuff is just soso. But of course you seem to be looking for a polished product,most of these AR solutions are aspirational and designed to help build reference implementations and AR Development capabilities.

In comparison I was way more impressed by the oculus and vive than I expected to be. Vr gets a bit boring after a while but I’ve never seen anyone try it who didn’t have an expression of joy on their face.
I tried Oculus for the first time yesterday and was very impressed. My last experience with VR was in the 90s, so my baseline was low, but it was a truly incredible experience.
VR is an experience like going to a movie theater to get lost in another world, which is why it has a future.

I’ll repeat my half-baked idea: the future of VR and AR is digital workplaces for better teleconferencing. Make it truly seamless to talk to colleagues while working remote. Disrupt office work as we know it and fix the externalities of commuting and being tied to a physical workplace. Why escape into fantasy worlds when you can make living in the real world more bearable?

Yeah, you'll have to have a way to record yourself and encode/decode/transmit in real time though.... Maybe in twenty years...

The peak of teleconferencing are the Hangouts and Facetime of this world, and they struggle to deliver almost-still-frame 1080p 2D video streams and high-quality audio.

We've seen Oculus and others try to push the idea that 3D will help. The focus is wrong. The bulk of the pain is in understanding, for which the brain relies on two factors: audio and face/mouth position.

Audio requires good microphones, which are too expensive to be commodity. At least, very good and fast STT autocues would help, especially with non-native speakers.

Faces could use dedicated compression algorithms.

Ideally, everyone would have Wacom-style devices on an online whiteboard, but that is only complementary. And it is still 2D.

Huh? MEMS mics cost cents and multiple of them are frequently used in phones to get a pretty acceptable-quality (almost good!) signal.

We maybe don't have the same scale to measure audio. What I find acceptable is “I hear the person just as well as if they were here”.

Hearing is a continuum. What the top 25% of hearing people consider OK quality is often what the lower 50% really struggles with, barely keeping up with the conversation.

Even in same-room audio conditions, most people ask for something to be repeated at least once in half the conversations I witness. Any further degradation rapidly increases this statistic. And I bet there are cases where people don't bother asking.

What webex/facetime/goto/hangouts needs is live transcripts, or... pretty live.

Each person's mic/setup has much better audio of what was said, and can be configured (eventually) to learn that person's accent. When 2-3 voices talk over each other, I have to ask people to stop/repeat, wasting time, losing momentum, when the computers themselves can likely give me a good indication of what was said via text as well as audio. And if a transcription is bad, the person can 'correct' it on their end, or just verbally - "no, that's not the word I used", etc.

OOh interesting. What's the blocker in terms of downstreaming? Are you looking for partners? Could be a great 5G/corporate networking use case I guess..
Finding the right partner and how to design a business around it. If it isn't a $1B business at Microsoft, it is hard to land. :/
IDK, all you really need is the joint position vectors and then animate the avatar on the receiving side...probably don't need a realistic rendering of your plumber when a cartoon hedgehog will do since all they're doing is transmitting concepts.
Also practical things like live conversation speech to text for deaf people. Pretty sure it will be cheaper than what gets spent on hearing aids.

Some of us work remotely in order to avoid constant disruption (especially software development). As such the queueing of IM conversations from colleagues is a good thing in this scenario.

The quality of the code that I write grows exponentially the less people ping me on Skype. While in the office code development was tertiary to various meetings, presentations, the occasional interview, even birthdays.

I admit, part of this is productivity theater. If you can simulate face time, seamless visibility at a meeting, sparking ideas spontaneously around the water cooler, etc., then maybe those dictating corporate conduct might actually be more willing to entertain mass adoption of remote work. As of now remote work is certainly feasible, but it’s definitely steps removed from the actual experience of being in person.

Also, my proposal isn’t meant to benefit engineers exclusively- teleconferencing through virtual workplaces should ideally help anyone who works in an office, not just those who are accorded more responsibilities that don’t involve social interaction.

I imagine the ultimate form factor would be eyecaps that are the visual equivalent to earbuds.
I remember one of the first hololens trailers featured someone trying to fix their own sink plumbing, and an expert skyping in and highlighting exactly what to do.

Making AR even slightly accessible is going to drastically change all of the trade skill industries. Any kind of simple job with something like plumbing, electrician, or car problems, you could call up a remote expert (or knowledgable friend/relative) and have them guide you through the job without forcing them to drive to your house. This would probably lead to training AIs to help with those same simple jobs, and eventually more complicated ones, but probably not for a good many years(?).

Maybe it's a lot easier said than done, but I feel like there are tons of more physical "remote work" opportunities that Magic Leap can open up, and they're not focusing on them nearly enough. Microsoft is pushing hard with using the hololens in industrial environments for training or collaborating, but even for just personal use, I could see myself buying AR goggles if it made learning basic handyman chores around the house easier to get started with, and hopefully feel less like a chore.

This is the application I'm waiting for. I hope whoever is working on this will make sure it won't remain forever locked down in corporate works. Professional specialization is not absolute, I don't want to become e.g. professional corporate electrician to get access to AR that would tell me how to fix or put together some electronics.
So very skeptical this will meaningfully impact the trades. Useful as a bit of DIY coaching, sure. A better Family Handyman or This Old House Ill grant.

But skilled trades are not just knowledge. They rely heavily on experience, skill, and equipment. For example which angle and torque to use with that spark plug, not just highlighting the plug on cylinder #3. A lot of this speaks to why there are apprenticeships instead of study sessions.

Theres also the UI and sensory problems in the hololens and your example. Transmitting fixed position AV misses out on a lot of contextual and situational awareness true presence delivers.

I feel like you're making a pretty big assumption here: that people care or want to think about the details of these types of jobs at all, let alone do anything themselves.

Part of the reason why a plumber or mechanic is so expensive is that you're buying not only the solution to the problem, but also your own time and energy that you would have spent thinking about and implementing that solution.

I love this idea but I can't see a mass market for it.

Many people use youtube for this. My experience is, it works well for almost any kind of repair or trade work you can think of.

You could "remote in" an expert, but now we're talking $10-$100 an hour as opposed to free. If you're doing the work yourself I think it's safe to assume you're not valuing your own time outside work at a high dollar value.

I don't know about a mass market - but I live in rural Oregon, and booking an appointment with a local tradesperson results in them showing up 4 to 6 months out - there just aren't enough of them. Sometimes you can convince someone to drive the 2-3 hours each way from one of the nearby cities - but most these guys don't relish 6 hours driving to install a fan.

So I use YouTube A Lot, and boy would I like to be able to pay someone to walk me through things. And I suspect there a a fair number of people in spots like me (if not so extreme). And I suspect there are a lot of Urban DIYers that occasionally get in over their heads and would use this service.

But quantifying this market would be hard.

I do think the ability to recreate the 3d environment, from the sensors on a device in the house would be pretty critical to this working. And the ability to show the customers in AR exactly what needs doing could be a difference that matters.

Still I'm not quitting my day job.

Ah, the 2.0 of talking your mum through some Windows hickup on the phone. If you believe in that market, don't wait for magic leap or anyone, start now building a marketplace for remote expert assistance. If it's viable with AR headsets it will also work using the handheld display and camera devices that everybody already has. When (or if, sorry, not a believer) AR hits mainstream, you will have an enormous head-start.

Ergonomically, it's much easier to hold your phone in your hand with the flashlight on, and point its camera at the plumbing under the sink to show a remote expert, than to strap some goofy goggles on your face and stick your head up under there looking around, with pipes bumping you and water splashing you in your extremely expensive electronic face.
I’ve never believed this idea that we will all be somehow teleconferencing with AR goggles in the near future.

Primarily because I think a lot of teleconferences end up being a waste of productive time but also why would I want to see AR repsentations of people also with their faces covered with a HMD? The solution is a digital avatar of them which is equally daft.

I agree. Teleconferencing does not need extra reality for the same reason you text people rather than call. Remoteness is often good. Do I want that meeting asshole more real?
The cell phone analogy is appropriate. This is first generation tech. Within 30 years it will be amazing and unobtrusive. Think eyeglasses or contact lenses with photo realistic rendering. I think it will be as important as the radio and TV was in shaping society both commercially and privately.

There are over 15 years of PDAs before the iPhone. It didn't appear out of thin air. It was an evolution from Newton->Palm Pilot->Clie->Windows CE PDAs->Sony Clie->iPhone

Yes, it was the one that got everything right and it did bring about a revolution but it was evolutional step. It shipped with cellular data (all previous PDAs it was optional). It had an interface designed for a finger rather than a stylus. But, if you were a geek and had PDA from 1995 though 2007 you had already had a PDA in your pocket, where already sending emails from your pocket, browsing the internet, downloading apps, etc...

AR will follow some similar progression. Today's AR is too large (same as Newton), with a bad display (same as Newton), too expensive (same as Newton), crappy OS (same as Newton). But someone will get it right eventually and bring about an AR revolution.

The magic came from getting the important things right, the software was amazing for demo purpose, which is what most people want anyway.

Yeah, maybe, someone, somewhere, will figure it out like Apple did with smartphones. The article does not dispute that. It just says that it probably won't be this company.
The problem is that is what magic leap was promising, and so far they have severely under-delivered.
It was a scam from day one, and Gizmodo et al are only catching up now..
Originally I found the Magic Leap extremely exciting, because in contrast to phones or tablets, whose touchscreens limit what sort of applications are feasible, AR could allow for arbitrary interfaces. These interfaces could be present alongside the real world, making them both more convenient and maybe less of an attention-vortex.

This is (among other things) what Magic Leap pitched, and comparing the actual product to their press releases is to note a vast discrepancy. Still, hope springs eternal, so while I wasn't impressed, I know how hard AR is and I wasn't inclined to judge too harshly-- maybe it will get better as technology improves.

After having read the article, I find myself rooting for them to fail. This is a company that has taken (and arguably squandered) billions of dollars to release a slightly cheaper HoloLens. Instead of feeling abashed, they continue blithely on, even having the temerity to invite developers to their platform because the rest of the world (and in particular, other platforms) has so much "baggage" and "negativity".

As the article notes, this is a company that is propped up by oligarchs, settles sex discrimination lawsuits, and is pursuing military contracts with repressive regimes. Although to be fair, improving soldiers' lethality is the only use case they've articulated that justifies the price. Now that the missed expectations and general shadiness are starting to catch up with them, they're moving to attract developers. Somehow, despite all the money, they haven't been able to pay for an idea to justify the hype-- what else could you call it but a con?

I generally agree with everything you've said except for the act of settling a sex discrimination lawsuit being a negative signal. The existence of a sex discrimination lawsuit is certainly not a positive signal for any prospective employer, but it takes both parties to come to an agreement to settle. Settlement is also the overwhelmingly likely outcome of most lawsuits (> 90% chance).

The prospect of going to trial concentrates the mind wonderfully. A clarity descends. Sometimes you learn things about your own case that you didn't know before. (that it sucks - maybe) Trials can be unpredictable, better to come to an agreement that both parties can live with than to roll the dice.

The problem is that the harasser is most likely in a position of power and can afford to live comfortably with quite a few such agreements.
I don't think you understand the difference between civil and criminal law. Almost all sexual harassment cases are going to be civil cases, where the only recompense a defendant can expect is monetary. No one is going to jail over a typical sexual harassment case. Now, if a crime such as sexual battery or rape was committed, criminal charges would likely follow.

If you win a case you get will get paid whatever is due to you, a wrong will be righted and people will move on with their lives. I understand that you may be dissatisfied with this arrangement, but we don't have time machines so there is no other recourse.

All lawsuits fall on a spectrum, there are strong and frivolous cases that settle and go to trial. It's impossible to make a judgement call without hearing the details of a case. If you want to risk going to trial on principle, you may find out that principles are very expensive.

The whole point of the lawsuit was all about how Magic Leap's company culture and product plans and demos and self image all revolved around adolescent male egos and sexist fantasies, and excluded women.

Tannen Cambell, who filed the lawsuit, was actually hired for the express purpose of solving Magic Leap's recognized "pink/blue problem", but was rebuffed and ignored. They knew they had a problem, and even gave it a name, but they refused to solve it.

Did all of that suddenly change after the lawsuit was settled?

Because if it did suddenly tangibly change, then that might be evidence that settling a sex discrimination lawsuit by changing their behavior was a positive signal.

But if they only forked over a big pile of hush money, signed non-disparagement agreements and gag orders, and went their separate ways, and Magic Leap didn't actually change their culture, then I don't think you could consider it positive sign or a constructive settlement for anyone other than the woman who was paid to keep her mouth shut.

So I took the time to read through the entire complaint and I hope she settled. I wouldn't characterize this lawsuit as frivolous, but a lot of what is put forward is extremely flimsy.

For example, it is perfectly fine to criticize someone who works at the same company in a slack channel if they're doing poor work. There are a lot of claims, but not many specifics to back up those claims. She paints Abovitz as a poor leader, being constantly mired in agendaless meetings and struck with a strong case of analysis paralysis. While bad leaders often do illegal things, it is not illegal to be a bad leader. Not every requested product change is ignored without cause. It's not shocking to have to ask for a promotion. Organizing speaking engagements with high profile female executives that command well over six figures per speaking engagement is unrealistic. Magic Leap is certainly not the first company to over hype the capabilities of its product.

I do find it curious that while Ms Campbell was hired to solve this "pink/blue" problem, none of her proposed solutions involved talking to potential female consumers about the product. If your solution to "How are we going to market this product to women when we release in Q1 next year?" is to raise a new generation of female engineers, your company will die. Also, I would like to point out that recognition of a problem does not guarantee that there is a solution to it. I'm certain that the makers of needlepoint kits would love to sell more embroidery materials to men. I'm less certain that there is a way of doing so.

I did like this excerpt from 25:

"A chaotic discussion with people talking over each other followed. The group made no decisions and none of the proposed changes were made to the design."

That accurately describes any large group product meeting I've ever attended.

The original Iphone wanted to eat cartographers lunch money. It wanted to be a layer between you and the world.

The Leap wants tot eat IKEAs and the whole decoration industrys money. It wants to be a layer between you and the world.

It might also be a attempt to stop the world move into this direction. If you creat a billion dollar ship wreck, it takes a whole manager generation to fade and loose that mental reef from theire mind-maps.

The vision of Vernor Vinge in Rainbows End is still valid in my opinion.

This article confirms a lot of the suspicions I had about Magic Leap's product, which is unfortunate. Had the company not overhyped the product and shipped with expectations so high, perhaps they could have had something which would actually impress the general public.

There's this implication that the white male leadership is only interested in the frilly escapist aspect of the product, and it's those in minority groups who are actually going to be pushing the boundaries of tech. Why include this in the article? Does the author honestly believe that's true? Do jabs at white men get clicks and heads nodding.now?

This civil war of opinion, can get the click rate up, if your article gets dragged into a flamewar or two.

Interesting that you see that as a "jab against white men" - I read it as a jab against monoculture. That the company's monoculture is middle aged white cis dudes is kind of beside the point.

A company this big needs to address most, if not all, people. The need for escapist leisure activity is something only relatively privileged people have. You only have to look at Google Glass to see what that limited appeal does to a product. It's a valid commercial consideration.

Yeah but the language used here makes it seem like white male product managers can't relay compelling visions for Magic Leap's future which isn't necessarily a correct statement.

They could have, but didn't.

The implication is that the PM in question was trying to advance their career on meritocracy grounds, while the other PMs get by on connections. I'm reminded of Theranos' extremely well-connected board.

I don't think there would be anything wrong with trying to market Leap as a gaming peripheral, but that implies a much smaller valuation, so ...

going to sound like a jerk but if i saw that (lord knows how filthy rich) chubby little CEO and he started talking in corporate buzzword speak i'd probably laugh in his face and then give him a good slap and say your st fking sucks man.

I like the line about the 'everyone is hallucinating but i missed the dosage'. I get this feeling in tech all the time. After working in industry for 5 years i really dont give a fk about any of your new technology. I've seen hundreds of thousands of dollars wasted on contractors trying to build fancy new tools instead of us properly building something in house. Wish they would have thrown the 100K over my way but that aint how it works.

is it any coincidence that our in-house built in 2 months postgres system has survived for 5+ years while every attempt for 'nosql' or 'just put your data on s3 and use lambda' or 'just put it in the data lake', or 'use kinesis streams' has failed miserably. Some random contractor made bank making a little toy project good for him. HE should go work for magic leap where you get to build meaningless kids games and be worth billions of dollars.

Why mention the race and gender of the culture, if the specific race and culture aren't relevant? The author easily could have made that point by saying "sci-fi obsessed leadership" instead of "white male sci-fi obsessed leadership".
Because white male culture is broader than just sci-fi? I'm making the point that both one specific culture means monoculture, and I think pointing out that it's white male is important. Techbroism is a thing. White men aren't incapable of empathy, but it's very much more difficult to address a diverse audience from one fixed viewpoint.
But why does the article go out of its way to say the white male leadership is interested in the escapist, scifi, entertainment aspect of AR, and makes a special point of the nonwhite nonmale manager being the one actually coming up with compelling usecases?

It seems like a cheap grab for article attention, piggy backing on the current political climate, and not a genuine analysis on why ML is failing to come up with inventive AR usecases. It cheapens the point the article could have made, but fails to explore at all: Diversity is needed to develop a product that appeals to everyone.

This thread is entertaining as an object lesson in white male fragility. Obsessing about a side note in an article because the scrutiny normally reserved for nonwhite-males is glancingly turned their way...

Instead of indulging the sense of alarm you get from this sort of (very mild) scrutiny, try to get outside of your ego and consider that this feeling you have is others' normal state of existence. You'll adapt better as demographics change and the wheel turns, and introspection is good for you.

As someone who was born as part of the race and gender being disparaged in the above comments, maybe I should be thankful. Yes, those comments were slightly hurtful, but mostly it was just really weird feeling hatred from another person based on the color of my skin and gender. I haven’t had a chance to feel that very often, and I honestly think the exercise was meaningful. Thanks for putting me in that position to know how much it hurts when people blindly hate based on race and gender. It might help me see things differently in the future (shrug). That being said, I would never disparage another race in the way that you just did. Way to keep it classy.

"white male" isn't a culture. I don't know if you're aware, but not every white male is the same, they come from diverse backgrounds just like every other race and gender.
You intersect with many cultures — examples might include religious culture, pop culture, Southern American culture, etc.

"White male culture" is a thing, but it's easy to be white and not aware of that if you take it for granted and/or think of it as "the default". (As an analogy, you might think you don't have "an accent" because you think of yours as the "normal" one.)

Escapist leisure activity is for more than just privileged people, see, e.g., video games, sports and movies.

Google Glass did not fail because it lacked a diverse perspective. It failed because it was a garbage product, way too expensive, early, and with no compelling functionality. (I feel the same way about HoloLens at it's current stage. I have not tried Magic Leap.)

Also, the diverse take was: "who spoke to me convincingly about a world freed from the tyranny of browser tabs, where you could ‘leave’ web pages in physical spaces where you’d need them; recipes in the kitchen, research articles in the office". That seems to me to be a far more 'privileged' use case than escapist entertainment.

The first iPhone had many flaws but none of these were false advertising, and it also had some unique abilities.

For example, it sported a capacitive touchscreen (touchscreens were mostly resistive back in 2007), it featured multitouch (you need a capacitive touchscreen for that), yet it didn't have 3G (it had EDGE), lacked copy/paste, lacked a repository ("app store"), lacked applications, and required a contract.

Add to that that Apple already existed, had a solid fanbase, and already released their first product for mass market (iPod), and well... Steve Jobs reality distortion field. Who knows what would've happened if Apple was a very new company with no such fanbase, history, or CEO.

I think it's wishful thinking. Everybody WANTS it to be the next iPhone, because the iPhone was wildly successful. That level of investing acumen unfortunately amounts to not much more than noticing that the iPhone happened. Like I noticed the Beatles happened, but saying my band is the next Beatles doesn't make it so. The iPhone and the Beatles were both products of very unique circumstances including a lot of plain random luck.

I feel that if AR finally gets to work in form of glasses, it'll have a bifurcated market - one will be entertainment for masses, the second one will be support tool for things like manufacturing. Which is kind of sad, because genpops will get toys, and the tools will go to corps. But I guess that's supply and demand. I just hope the entertainment glasses will be open enough to support a cottage industry of small software shops & open source coders doing tools for individual productivity.

Now I hope one day we'll get AR contact lenses or some other form of inconspicuous AR. I'd love to have the ability to switch it on and do some compute at a whim, without fumbling with special glasses, and having to mind the social situation in which I'm in.

As for Magic Leap - I get that AR is hard, but this level of hype is inexcusable. They're burning through general interest in the field and trust towards everyone working in it for sake of some quick buck. The sooner they get forced to realign with reality, the better.

Magic Leap reminds me a lot of the early days of Segway. There’s some cool tech there somewhere, but the hype vastly exceeds the reality.

Here's why I am immediately skeptical.

People think games are easy. People think entertainment is a solution. That is almost always a sign of someone in trouble.

In reality, entertainment is the reddest of red markets. It is incredibly difficult to make a compelling experience. Even more difficult to sell it. Include risk in the calculation and you are literally better off working for minimum wage than writing a game.

It is absolutely no coincidence that this conference mostly showed off games. And - by all reports - very crappy ones, with game play you would expect from a game jam (albeit dressed up in million-dollar graphics). It is no coincidence they haven't got a proven game studio on board: their flagship game is created _under contract_ by a VFX company.

Games are not your Trojan horse use case. Figure out what your product is for. Get it in consumers hands. And you can bet your ass game devs will exploit it (iPhone anyone?). Otherwise you are a novel gaming peripheral. And you are going to have to work _a lot harder_ to show games worth playing. Even VR is struggling (and, I would say, failing) there.

So far, Google glass is still the most compelling AR tool I've seen.

Google glass doesn’t even qualify as AR, it’s just a HUD. And it had a huge amount of disadvantages, even hololens, for certain use-cases, was destroying it for AR.

What is AR supposed to be good for anyways? I see all those fancy demo videos (which are of course fake) and still ask myself what problem AR could solve. Magic Leap as well as the HoloLens require much computing power sitting next to you under the table, so you are not mobile with those headsets. So what real problem could this solve?
It will end up being a "better phone". The best application is telepresence: create a virtual space to work with a team, but no one is physically present, everyone is remote. Yet able to turn on/off presence in the shared space as needed to accomplish their group task at hand. Kind like Slack, but with the ability to communicate in nearly any form, from small non-obtrusive msg bubbles (like a text) to full video windows when necessary showing whatever needs to be visualized to answer questions. The "killer app" is enabling ones physical location to be irrelevant to working with others.
What is AR good for today? Almost nothing. What is it's potential? HUGE

Why do you need monitors if you have AR contact lens. Project as many monitors as you want where ever you want them. Sit in cafe and make it appear as if you have a 60 inch monitor on the table in front of you and a few tablets on the table.

In a conference room show a 3D model of building, bridge, or physical project and discuss it with the team pointing directly at parts of the model that appear simulated in the shared projection. Basically imagine any hologram scene in a Sci-fi movie like say showing the 2nd Death Star in Return of the Jedi. Those scenes assume some kind of magic 3D projector. Maybe that will be possible someday but it's nearly possible today if everyone is wearing AR glasses or contacts

Project data about people at a conference next to each person. Just like people at a conference wear badges except with AR badges they can be much larger with more info.

Have the AR point out the person you're looking for by putting a marker over their head or draw navigation prompts as you walk around.

Show virtual drawing surfaces allowing you to draw or annotate anything.

I can't help but feel the world jumped into "the future is here" mode way too early. AI, AR, VR -- these have all promised sci-fi-esque experiences that simply can't be delivered with current technology.

I suspect it's to do with the fact that innovation is slowing down across the globe, yet the public expects it to continue at the same pace it's been running for the past 50 years. The market wants the next computer, the next internet, the next iPhone. What happens when it doesn't show up?

I've had amazing "sci-fi" experiences in VR.

Lone Echo on Oculus, Farpoint on PSVR, and others. So blown away that certain geners of non-VR games are not completely non-compelling to me. Those 2 games, while not the best games ever, gave me the feeling of "being there".

The difference between playing games on a monitor and games in VR, the good ones, is like the difference between a picture of the grand canyon and being and the grand canyon. The picture does no justice. Sure it might be pretty but it gives no sense of the scale and presence. You don't feel that there's a mile deep canyon that's 20 miles to the other side. You just see a pretty picture. In VR though you do get that sense of scale. That volcano in the distance in Farpoint actually feels 3 miles high with a 20 mile high plum of ash. Hiding behind a piece of rock actually feels like hiding and not "pressing the hide button".

Looks like that conference had two completely different audiences.

As a developer, I tend to look at things and wonder about the future: "what can I build with this?"

I'm getting the realization that the equivalent for journalists is something like: "what controversies can I write about this?"

I don't get the hate; I played around with the Hololens for a bit and while the FOV issues are hard to ignore, both devices are steps forward into an interesting and likely THE interface for future computing.

One can hope that if MagicLeap fails at least someone will pick up the IP and continue to develop it.

Plenty of journalists wrote positively or hopefully about Magic Leap, which is why it had significant hype and expectations. Being optimisitic about the future is not necessarily a commendable perspective if it’s rooted in credulity.

One of my favorte films of all time. Practically nobody has seen it, and for many that do they fixate on trivial points. The film and book are monumental intellectual works, and are being missed by many who would dearly love them.

We are at the point where the most gripping experience is contextual browsing. What if instead of just showing you the recipe it actually used ar to demonstrate how to do each action of the thing it was showing. It seems absurd that this kind of thing is the first thing you can think of but companies that have billions of dollars invested in to them are unable to come up with any compelling idea of what they have all the money in the world to throw at a dartboard and still none of it even hits.
One note.

There were at least 10 startups that failed to produce LCD projector displays, which are now ubiquitous and cheap.

There were at least 20 startups that failed at non-piercing blood glucose measurement, which is now accessible and not outrageously expensive.

So something will come of this. But Magic Leap is going down.

Billions of dollars and still charging a pretty penny for the hardware? Should have put several million into making free headsets available to developers vetted to some basic degree, and see what happens
