It seems like a lot of references to “developed” but really it’s just “designed”.

Does one actual unit exist right now, or is this just a thought piece?

Traffic proves there is a market, if there is a market, there is a acceptable pitch, if there is a acceptable pitch, there is a company, if there is a company, there might just be one day a product.
The limited pictures (many just renderings?) make it look like it isn’t collapsible? And as @aplummer mentioned the lack of real world photos makes it seem designed vs actually made..
Probably, a couple of pounds saved is not important given the weight of a person on that wheelchair.
As someone who's helped wheelchair-bound people get around, I can say that the weight of a wheelchair - as well as easy collapsibility - matters a lot when moving people around by car.
If it's anything like bicycling, and it seems like it should be vaguely comparable, I'm sure the couple of pounds (1-2 kg) makes a noticeable difference in real world use.
Carry a 20 lbs backpack for a bit. Then take two pounds out and see if you can tell.
