Ask HN: What are some good beginner data science projects?

I'm taking a data science/machine learning course and we were given a few project ideas, but also the freedom to choose a project for ourselves, provided it meets the criteria. My initial ideas were:

* tweets sensitization * solving equations from a photo, by recognizing them (we have yet to learn about neural networks, so I'm not sure whether I'll manage to do this).

Any suggestions?
