As a transgender person I mostly agree with this article. Since starting Hormone Replacement Therapy I did have major improvements in life. I started dating, I started making friends, I felt emotions, I cried, my skin was soft and my face was with cute pink cheeks, my body hair almost entirely stopped growing; I felt like I was heading in the right direction, felt a sense of some comfort, and it relieved a lot of symptoms for me. I was being called 'she', 'miss', 'ma'am' and it made me happy and greatly improved my quality of life. I'm not sure how this couldn't be considered treatment, or even compared to a therapist handing a suicidal patient a razor to just end it now. While it may not work for everyone, it does work for some. We give anti-depressants to people which have the side effect of possibly creating more suicidal thoughts and not working on most people, but that's perfectly fine? Hormones are not a death causing drug.

I'm now off of them due to not being able to afford my health insurance deductible and I feel like an absolute mess of a human being again. I feel the dysphoria. The only emotions I feel now are anger and crippling depression. I criticize everything about me and feel like I'm falling down a hole again. I feel like my life is over again.

Edit: Why the downvotes? D:

You misunderstood the article - it was arguing that treatment makes people worse and despite that, it should be allowed.
I'd rephrase it to "it was arguing that treatment should be allowed even when it makes people feel worse".
What is this doing on hacker news?
Does modern medicine really have gender transformation figured out?

When I think of medicine, i think of a scale.

Vaccinations work, we’re good at mending broken bones, appendix surgery saves lives but is iffy, but teeth are beyond our ability to save.

Is transgender surgery and lifetime hormone replacement on the safer side of that spectrum?

Any major surgery is going to give you pain for life.

Saying "I feel like a (fe)male deep inside" is akin to saying "I identify as a hunchback whale, saw on some fins so I can feel like myself."

Being gay is one thing, cross-dressing is one thing - there are no health implications, it's about beliefs, whatever. Fucking up your health because you "feel like a girl" is stupid. The irony is thick here, since these are commonly people that believe "Gender is just a social construct" - and it is, to a large degree, so why ruin your health?

"Transitioning" is idiotic.

Edit: My dear haters, please do explain yourselves. I would love to hear about how a sawn-on dick that doesn't work or a mangled, painful, ever-dry orifice makes your life better. If this sounds "cruel" or "lurid", consider the people who are encouraging people to have it done.

There is tolerance and being unique, and there is making your life needlessly painful.

This is over-the-top trolling on an inflammatory topic. If you do that again, we will ban you. We've already had to give you several similar warnings. That's not cool.

I realize that any sort of argument here will be taken as being bitter and/or further "trolling", but I would genuinely love to discuss what part of my post is offensive (besides the obvious strong language, which I agree was inappropriate).

Surgery is a huge deal that can ruin someone's life. Doubly so for elective surgery. Downplaying this aspect is downright harmful. This isn't hate of any sort, this is awareness of reality and concern for people's well being.

It's a strange world when warning someone how much harm surgery can do is considered inflammatory.

“The art of medicine consists of amusing the patient while nature cures the disease.”
"the gender they’ve been socially assigned" - you mean biologically?
