I wonder if the folks defending Apple by referencing the "cheap $30 battery replacement fee" knew this was just a temporary response to the outrage. The new price ($50-70) still isn't too bad, but that's still a 140-230% increase in the price you have to pay for Apple to not slow down your device on purpose.
Prepare to leave your iPhone and pick it up the next day, particular if you have an appointment late in the day.
It’s quite an interesting experience though, living without a mobile phone for 24h: no Chat, no Maps to find your way, no Calendar to make appointments, no phone to make calls (I solved that by forwarding it to another, or you can take out the SIM and put it in another)
Of course make a backup in itunes, copy that backup to second location, verify the backup (eg with the trial edition of iPhone Backup Extractor), then DFU the iPhone and install a fresh iOS, then disable Find my iPhone
If your screen has even a single crack - Apple will insist that you need to replace the screen in addition to changing the battery. The screen costs >$150 from what I recall.
