Ask HN: Which factors influence adoption of standards?

I work with research so I have a lot of "what if" moments, e.g., "what if we use X technique to secure IoT devices". However, this often leads me to think "the idea is good, but it would require everyone to implement it".

Knowing that convincing people is a very hard thing to do, I would like to hear what you think are important factors for the success of widely adopted standards.
