Ask HN: What happens to outstanding stock options?

I've always wondered what happens in case there's an acquisition and there are some stocks from the employee options pool that do not really have an owner or anything around. Who's the owner of these? Do they go to the buyer? Do they go back to the founders? Does this depends on the deal?
