Ask HN: How did you stop comparing yourself to others?

I found out an acquaintance is joining Google today and I had my day ruined because of it - I don’t compare particularly favorably to him, and a reminder that I’m a lower tier SWE at a lesser company sent me into a spiral of depression and self doubt.

This happens to me quite a bit - I’ve tried making goals to avoid this thinking, but I feel as though I don’t have the grit to continue them and the comparison persists. How has the HN community dealt with these feelings?
