If you know some basics deep learning, you can find source code on github to play with. You will also find tutorials made by communities of developers and users.
Otherwise, if you look deep enough on the Internet, there are already websites offering deepfake as-a-service for a rather low price.
Not all these tools were developed for malicious purposes. Quite the opposite. But today it is up to everyone of us how this tech get utilised. And while it's becoming easier and cheaper to get realistic synthetic imagery, with better tools day by day, it is not yet obvious how we will cope with fake videos in our society.
The way we see it: if today we are used to scan files downloaded from potentially unsafe sources, tomorrow we will get used to scan videos to check their authenticity -- check that they have not been tampered with, changing their conveyed meaning. Arguably, the same will hold for social media and video hosting websites.
While traditional malware are there to infect other piece of software, fake videos targets the human brain. This is more akin to social engineering.
The DeepFake thing could be agitprop--there are allegedly a whole lot of blackmail videos featuring public figures that might become public and the elite need a way to dissuade the public about all of it. What better way that to say that it's all just computer-generated fakes? Our problem with these nefarious people is that we don't know what to believe and we can't even believe our own eyes.
Is the video a fake? Is it real? All they need is to cast some doubt and they win. Either it's a foreign intelligence operation or a domestic one, take your pick.
I personally believe that every politician has a blackmail file and the WESTERN agencies are to blame because that is the simplest answer--Occam's Razor. These Intelligence agencies run the world and they have dirt on everyone important. That is my take on this. IOW, most of the videos will end up being REAL not fake.
The accusations surrounding the Vatican are eye-popping if true. Think human trafficking, especially regarding children. We'll see.
Regardless of real or fake, don't you all think it's time that certain families stopped ruling the world?
