Ask HN: Safety of Antibiotics

I'm scheduled for a minor surgical procedure which isn't quite necessary (I can happily live without it).

What bothers me is that I'm supposed to ingest antibiotics every day for a week after the procedure.

I have been told that topical (i.e on skin) application of the antibiotics isn't an option.

I worry about the long term consequences of whatever effect they'd have on gut bacteria.

Is my worry justified?
