Recommend HN: “Return of the Obra Dinn”

It's an indie mystery/logical deduction game available on steam that's just amazing.

The premise is this: the year is 1807 and the lost trade ship the Obra Dinn has come drifting back into harbor in London, its entire crew dead. You are the chief insurance inspector tasked with determining the identity and fate of each corpse aboard the ship.

To do this, you have the ship's manifest and a magic pocketwatch that lets you see the scene as it was at the moment of each corpse's death, and hear the last few seconds of sound that the person heard before their death.

Solving the mystery is a lot like debugging a program or solving a sudoku-- a slow, methodical exercise in logic.

It is extremely difficult and extraordinarily well done. Can't recommend it enough. The style, the imagery, the soundtrack, the plot, is all as unique and well-executed as games get.
