Why did data marketplaces never really take off?

I know a number of data marketplaces were founded a couple years ago, but it seems that most have shut down or aren't really as big as you would expect them to be considering how important and widespread data has become in modern industry. Why?

Maybe if data is truly a strategic asset (oh hey Facebook) then it's worth vertically integrating everything in house.
I was thinking along the same lines. But wouldn't many companies, especially those without the scale and channels to monetize their own data like Facebook can, benefit from an additional channel to monetize that data?
