Ask HN: effective ways to learn systems language

I work for a startup using primarily high-level languages (ruby, python, R), and have no real industrial nor academic (having studied maths) exposure to a systems language. Does anybody have any suggestions on how I might approach this self-educational project, references I might employ, stories about how they did it?
