There has been done so much research around VOIP, and so many protocols have been developed and released from the 2000s. Still however, we are talking in Silos: Messenger, Whatsapp, Skype, Hangouts, Viber etc.

Yes, user experience might be better in terms of media/quality since video is just a button away, however, when we want to use the most fundamental feature of PSTN, which is interconnectivity, being able to call anyone globally, we are doomed.
