Ask NH: Would you hire a GUI designer for your startup?

I think GUI design/usability is very important for any user facing application. I am a programmer but not a GUI design/usability expert and I doubt I can design a great GUI for my app. Should I try to design the GUI anyway, find a designer co-founder, hire a great designer?
