Ask HN: What's the best tutorial for building a scalable service from scratch

With all the different cloud platforms doing most of the heavy lifting for us, I wonder what it took to build all of this functionality in-house in the pre cloud era. I was curious to learn how to build a service like that which scales to a million qps on a cloud based linux machine. Are there any tutorials that can help me get started ?
