Ask HN: Security Projects for CS Grads

Hi all, I’ve recently graduated university and secured a grad position in the security field but is mainly firewalls and SIEM’s. I’m looking to work on some more programming-focussed personal projects outside of work to build up a portfolio but wasn’t sure where to start.

Would building a “functional” web app with a database and login page and harden those be the way to go? Open to any and all ideas!
