This will totally stop the next attack. Uh huh.
Sounds like the new ban will make NZ similar to Australia in regards to firearm regulation. Sounds pretty good to me - shootings are very rare down under, and anecdotally all the farmers I know have access to firearms when needed.

Reading as a layman.

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military-style_semi-automatic a "military-style semi-automatics" is a weapon with:

* Folding or telescopic butt

* Magazine that holds, or is detachable and has the appearance of holding more than 15 cartridges (for .22 rimfire)

* Magazine that holds more than 7 cartridges, or is detachable and has the appearance of holding more than 10 cartridges (for other than a .22 rimfire)

* Bayonet lug

* Pistol grip as defined by regulation

* Flash suppressor

And I'm unclear how banning any of those things would have made any difference at all. Except maybe the large magazine, although in the video you can see him swap magazines several times.

I'd assume they'll be heavily regulating semiautomatic weapons, similar to Australia. I think that's where most of the benefit would come from - I imagine it's a lot harder to commit a mass shooting with a bolt action .22

It would not. But they could report they "done something".
