Ask HN: Best Hardware for VP9 Encoding

1 points by TooSmugToFail ↗ HN
I'm looking for an SBC platform to implement a fast VP9 encoding and live-streaming device.

Does HN have any experience with hardware VP9 encoders out there?

I know that the choice of SoCs with hardware implementation of VP9 encoders is rather limited: effectively, we're talking about KabyLake (which can be found in Latte Panda Alpha) and Exynos 8890. Wondering what sort of FPS I can reasonably expect to achieve.

Also, I've heard anecdotal evidence of people using Google's Coral Edge TPU Module (https://coral.withgoogle.com/tutorials/devboard-datasheet/) for very fast VP9 encoding.

I can see that it does not appear to have a VP9 encoder implemented in hardware, so I guess the software implementation of the encoder runs really well on the ASIC being used on the TPU.

Any experience with any of these?

Thanks!
