Dear Amazon: Cancel My Account, You Bums
I am a multi-year Amazon prime member and kindle user. I've spent several thousand dollars with Amazon over this time. You have a fantastic shopping tool and before today, I believed, a fantastic brand.
I thought you understood what the internet can mean for our society and our lives. Selling books and shoes is only the tip of the iceberg. The internet has the power to force transparency in the halls of power. Is it not self evident, no matter your political affiliation, that waning transparency relates to higher corruption and hurts all citizens as a result? Exactly who are you counting on to keep our elected officials honest these days - Fox or CNN? Some one has must step up to do the job that our institutions won't.
Your behavior today was unacceptable. How can you be so close to a rare source of positive change in our world and roll over so quickly? Your business is built on high availability, distributed data. He is leveraging this very thing to bring freedom through accountability. Isn't this worth supporting or at minimum keeping a channel open by accepting payment for services rendered? Don't you understand the long term implications of your actions? You must. This saddens me. God help us all if this is what an organization that "gets it" decides is in their best interest.
You are, for the time being, still free to do what you choose. But so am I and I won't support you. Cancel my account you bums.

[ 0.25 ms ] story [ 10.2 ms ] threadThere are some influential people carrying big agendas here and I think Amazon doesn't want to be in the gunsights. Maybe it isn't noble, but I think they are entitled to steer clear.
It is very likely that privately they agree with WikiLeaks' cause. Hedging your brand on it is a different story.
HOWEVER it would have been fantastic to see them make a stand.
