Ask HN: What are some good exercises to test Linux / OS knowledge?

If you were to interview candidates for roles where OS / Linux (or Windows for that matter) knowledge was important, what kind of take home exercises would you like them to do?

I'm thinking there should be a good balance between complexity and time required to finish the exercises.

Also, what things or data would you be looking for, apart from solving the actual scenario?
