Ask HN: How to capture time-lapse of industrial smoke?

I live in an industrial city with both harbor and oil refineries, which is a source for heavy air pollution. As part of my environmental activism, I would like to create time-lapses of smoke emissions from the various chimneys in the area.

I would like to establish a setup of various remote controlled video cameras shooting in timelapse mode (any tips and suggestions for this would be appreciated).

My main concern is how to post-process the video to enhance the smoke emissions in it, since in various tests I performed, the smoke in the video does not seem so significant as it is in reality.
