Ask HN: How to get better at developing larger projects?

I've been lurking for a while and this is my first post. I'm a junior developer that is looking to get more experience designing and developing larger applications. Other than doing them, which is the obvious course of action, I was wondering if there was any recommendations on any materials that one could study or practice with? Would step by step guides in building such an application be the right way to go? The problem I'm having is that there's a lot of suggestions about what you should do in specific situations, but there's very little (at least from what I found on the Internet) of people discussing their thought process from start to finish.
