Ask HN: What happened to the print quality of science books?
First I got a thermodynamics book from Amazon and the print quality was so bad that I returned it. I thought it was a pirate print (although I bought it new and directly from Amazon).
Today I picked up two orders from the local bookshop: The Logic of Science by Jaynes and All of Statistics by Wasserman. In both, the type quality is much worse than in my older science books and textbooks. The contour of letters is not sharp, pages look like what I used to get with my inkjet printer. These are hardcover editions, each costing over 100 USD.
Is this the new normal for science books? Any hint to avoid bad surprises? Did editors just drop the ball on printed books?
