Ask HN: What to do with usable electronic components/parts

Hello HN,

My father recently passed away. He was an electronics engineer for over 50 years. As such, he has tens of thousands of usable parts. Things like unused IC's, relays, switches, diodes, SCR's, rectifiers, trimpots, resistors, etc. Everything under the sun. Some going back to the 60's. I know there are electronic recycling places to "safely dispose of old electronics," which is great, but this is new/usable stuff that just about any EE/hobyist (arduino?) would be able to use. It's mostly through-hole stuff (no surface mount). I will probably have 3-4 rubbermaid tubs FULL of components when we go through to clean out the house this weekend. Does anybody have any suggestions so this stuff might get used instead of just "disposed of safely?" A tax write off for a donation would be nice, but not absolutely necessary. I'm more about getting it to people who could put it to use. I'm in Portland, OR if that helps. Thank you for any suggestions. I have a lot to deal with (there wasn't a will) so researching each of these things is quite cumbersome.
