Ask HN: Cheap VPS Providers?

15 points by mhlakhani ↗ HN
Don't need anything too fancy, just something that has decent uptime and is enough to run a Wordpress site and a mail server. Budget hosts are preferred, as my budget is tight.

I had a look around, but some opinions might be helpful too. What would you guys suggest?

Stuff that I've checked:

http://quickweb.co.nz/vps-plans/supa-vps-plans.html (Seemed a little too good to be true)

http://prgmr.com/xen/ (The $8 plan, but I see no way to order)

prgmr.com is based on availability. there are times when they have no space, so they dont allow you to order.
Thanks for that, it wasn't mentioned anywhere. I think I can wait for like a month or so at maximum, so let's see.
i'd email them and see. i know i was going to use them last year but they had no space for a couple months so i went w/ something else.
btw, whoever downvoted me for providing basic info; thanks- you're a gem.
Check lowendbox.com
Thanks! I'm having a look at this right now.
How about an EC2 micro (600MB ram) reserved instance? $54 one-time fee for a year (~$4.5/m), then .007 an hour (~$5/m). Comes out to a around $10-12/m depending on bandwidth usage and other AWS usage factors.
Hmm. Their free usage tier might be interesting as well, for a year at least. But you have to take bandwidth usage into account, other VPS providers seem to give much more bang for the buck there.
I'm on Rizie and couldn't be happier, VPS service starts at $4/month.

This looks promising, do their VPS plans have full root access?
Yes, they provide a few choices of Linux distro and then you get full access to everything.
webbynode.com is pretty cheap, and fantastic for deployment etc.,
This topic is always coming up on HN, and generally the two favourites are www.slicehost.com and www.linode.com. (Personally I've used them both and would support both, though my choice is currently Linode due to availability of UK servers.)

I manage a Linode for someone else, and so far it's been great. For personal use I'd rather use something cheaper though, budget's a bit tight. Thanks anyhow for the great links!
