It's all definitional. If you define socialism as "the government does a thing" then practically everyone is a socialist. If you define socialism as "the government influences industry for the benefit of the people" then quite a few people are socialist. If you define socialism as "an intermediate stage between capitalism and communism wherein there is a dictatorship of the proletariat" then very few people are socialist.
Good thing, since America has had a variety of socialist policies in place since before anyone currently alive was born and continues to.
