It's FUD because there's nothing special about this incident- all three of my cars (Buick, Dodge, and Suzuki) would have behaved the same way if I left the ignition on and my unsupervised child hit the breaks to moved it onto drive.

I'm not a Tesla Fanboy or anything but if this is true I don't see how they are at fault.
A toddler operating a vehicle is a possibility in almost all consumer cars, especially when not turned off.
Only manual transmission cars provide a challenging enough interface that a young child mimicking the motions of driving couldn't accidentally cause an accident.
The problem isn't that the data is collected, it's that Tesla is the one collecting it and not the owner. But honestly, the average person isn't going to care about or even be capable of maintaining that. So really we could just consider this to be a valuable service Tesla is offering. Even more so, imagine if Tesla had to defend their driving systems from lawsuits without having access to this data. I'm not sure they'd be able to survive as well as they do.

If the data is recorded, it will be in Teslas possession by the next over air update or service, right?

Well, that's exactly what the automotive industry has been able to do up to very recently. Just because technology allows for it doesn't mean society or the consumers should.

this is not interesting at all... she left her car running and her child put the car in gear. this story should be removed.
