When did the dispassionate defense of reason become an 'asshole' trait? Is ignoring emotion not the right way to consider anything logically? While his bedside manner leaves a bit to be desired, it does at least try to move the debate foreward. While I am no defender of the 'rockstar jerk', we can not judge the merits of an idea principally on the attitude of the author.
Reason is well and good, but the article linked is all about how Pinker's are arguments are not, in fact, as dispassionate and reasonable as he'd like to think
This actually makes sense. If you get upset because someone sounds patronizing, wouldn't it make sense to look for the root cause in yourself, e.g. a low self esteem or whatever else that is triggering this negative emotion?
