The drawings of it always made me think of a spotted hyena which a nobleman may have gotten from Africa. Not sure how credible those drawings are though.
I can't believe I haven't heard of this before, considering how many people it attacked. I bet it was a pack of abnormally large and vicious wolves. It's weird that the attacks suddenly started, though.
