Ask HN: Why not prohibit Google/Facebook from having more data than necessary?

Wouldn't that solve almost all problems that we face today with these giant social media and web giants at once?

It would basically remove the possibility of targeted advertising which is the root of most evil as far as I can see. + no privacy issues + mass manipulation much more difficult
