How many people work at Youtube again? What is their age distribution?

Now, from the general population, for those at his age, how many have experimented with LSD?

Note - I am going to claim ignorance of these things, but I am skeptical about the claim: Was it really LSD? I mean, that's what they believed it was; that's what it was called when sold to them. But was it? There are more than a few substances that can be put on a blotter or sugar cube/pill and be called "LSD" - but that doesn't make it so.

From what I understand, obtaining the precursors for manufacturing LSD is virtually impossible, short of stealing them from somewhere (problem: how did those places get them? I mean - they are super-tightly controlled, at least in the USA). And that's if you're trying to make it using the "simple" method (I'm not a chemist) - which isn't easy to do (based on the "lab recipes" I have read).

The next best way is to make the precursors - and based on what I read about how to do that - let's just say you really need to be a chemistry (organic?) expert to pull that off. Of course, this just could be me being a layperson when it comes to this talking; maybe it's super simple?

But there's a reason why there weren't that many people actually making LSD in it's heyday - it just wasn't easy to make (not like meth and similar substances - which are still difficult, short of the shake-n-bake method - and dangerous).

The only other route would be getting the precursors shipped from overseas, or just having LSD manufactured overseas via any number of labs that'll do it, no questions asked (cash only). Maybe that's what is happening?

Why anybody would trust such overseas "LSD" or even precursors...for all anybody knows, he (and the others who took it) actually got some PiHKAL/TiHKAL concoction that somewhat acts like LSD - but not really.

As far as I know, all of the people who actually knew and could make LSD (properly and safely, and were respected for it) are all in prison. They'll probably die there.

I'm always skeptical about these kinds of reports; I'm sure this guy took something, and he and his friends may actually believe it was LSD. But I am skeptical that it actually was; I've never touched the stuff, but from what I have read about its effects, is that while you could have a bad trip, killing a bunch of people during such a trip is less likely than you doing something stupid and killing yourself. And that's generally due to being in a "bad scene" - not having supportive people around to keep you calm (especially those already familiar with the actual drug), not having the right music, lighting, wall colorings, etc. But again, maybe I am wrong; I've just never heard of such a thing.

But analogs and similar so-called "designer" drugs? Yeah - those can and do have some weird and dangerous effects. To be honest, this actually sounds like he was on PCP or something like that, not LSD. But again - my ignorance here...

  Was it really LSD?

I've just never heard of such a thing.
So, it's fine that you're questioning the official story speculatively, since there's no released lab report or court documents confirming the nature of the substance used.

But understand that there will be, since this is going to go to trial, and lots of people will want to know EXACTLY what was going on here. At that point your skeptical musings will be dispelled.

There are plenty of stories involving LSD and people going nuts. People lose their shit with high doses of cannabis.

To color up your understanding of LSD read through trip reports on http://erowid.org and you'll see clear evidence of breaks with reality induced by drugs. It just so happens that the avid users enter into these states with an understanding of the risks. [0,1]

Dropping acid on a holiday weekend because friends have some will bring more fragile personalities into the fold. People like this may be hiding a lot from their peers, and it all comes loose with the disinhibiting aspects of the dosage.

Deep down, he was probably a really pent up, angry person with concealed animosity which, once spilled over, probably fueled a chain reaction. He knew he was in deep trouble and decided it was total ruin, and he tried to make it even worse.

LSD isn't a dissociative, but it does disinhibit behavior. Some people remain lucid and in control, and others don't.

Keep in mind, he took a lot. You're projecting a balanced person's reaction to a drug as a one-size-fits-all reaction. You aren't accounting for individual differences. It may be that this guy was on edge and unstable already, which is why these heavier drugs really aren't for everyone. Some people have far too delicate a psyche to freely indulge in every drug put in front of them.
