Ask HN: What are the benefits of publishers like Elsevier?

On various thread there is a lot of criticism on publishers like Elsevier about how they add no value at all. I'd like to also hear about the good things to form a more nuanced opinion. Surely there must be things that these publishers do that provides some value? Maybe in the sense of providing funds for research or support in another form?
