Only if the author of the newsletter had some unique knowledge or insight that (1) I was interested in and (2) I couldn't find for free on the web.

A random collection of articles from the mass media or the tech media? No thanks, I can get all I want of that on HN for free without cluttering up my inbox.

I agree, in both cases I would say you’re paying for the author’s time (to create content or gather articles from the internet).
