If you make a poll like that on Reddit, guess who wins?
So, You are confident that HN is going to win this one?
i like both ;)
Exactly. Reddit is especially nice if you want to see things broken down by topic: For example, if I want semantic web news, I go to /r/semanticweb, if I want a dose of machine learning stuff, it's /r/machinelearning, etc.
Tagging of stories on HN would be nice.

Define "best". If I'm looking for technology/startup/IT content, HN wins. If I'm looking for world news/cute pictures of cats/humour, Reddit wins.
In my experience, the content that shows up on both is comparable. The quality of HN content can be said to be marginally better as you don't see some silly screenshot getting upvoted to front page.

The main reason I prefer HN because of the quality of comments. Smart oneliners on Reddit were fun at first but they don't really provide any insight or value.

Agreed. Reddit is great for silly comments, while HN has serious discussion and insightful analysis.

Both. The business content on Reddit isn't as interesting or as dynamic. The 'funny' aspect on HN can't be compared to Reddit. And so on...
