Ask HN: Can public internet services solve privacy issues online?

1 points by buzz_123 ↗ HN
Would having our government/s create public internet services like Search, Maps, Storage(Drive), Social Media solve our privacy issues?

If our governments created this service, we'd have more oversight into how these services are monetized and why decisions are made. We could avoid data exploitation by designing applications that don't save as much personal data.

Open source developers could contribute to the code base and not worry about "keeping the project alive" as its backed by the government.

The main issues I can think of are around quality of service (Gov services are known to be slow and frustrating) and continuous innovation.

Thoughts?
