Virtue signaling is what pretend heroes do. 100%
This is interesting and admirable to see on Quillete, as their audience is not generally welcoming to the thesis. It's a good look for them.
I thought I would understand what virtue signalling was by the end of this article if there was enough context clues, but I still have no idea what this is supposed to mean. I get the impression the author believes the reader should already know what they are talking about.
Third paragraph:

Thanks. I seemed to have missed that as I was expecting it to be something that every human does and this kind of thing doesn't resonate with me.
The connotation is that it's signalling only, that there's no substance behind it. "All hat no cattle" as the Texans say.
