They are crazy if they think I'm gonna stop carrying when I shop there, or if anybody else is.
The text of the article notes this change concerns "open carry" only. Even in Alaska, this seems unlikely to affect many Walmart customers.
in alaska you have to have permission to enter private property while in possesion of a firearm, publicly accessed private property is a different case and a sign usually is used to notify people you dont want them to enter with a firearm, as well as to serve as a reminder in prohibited or restricted areas such as one of the bases or a federal institution. That being said if you ever visit Alaska your best assumption is that everyone, even a little kid is carrying or has nearly immediate access to a firearm.

There is a reason for the dearth of firearms and that reason[s] is about 1000lbs covered in fur whith 6inch claws and pointy teeth. when a brownie starts tearing into your cabin you want a large calibre weapon and quick recharge. 44 magnum or large cartridge 30 cal rifle with a magazine ie Ruger mini 30 is the usual choice

there are a lot of firearms in alaska and the aquisition/possesion laws are loose but there is little leniency for weapons misconduct.

Without getting political about this issue, I have a question.

I imagine the reason you're carrying is for self defence, say in the case of an active shooter for example.

Let's say you're able to take down the shooter. During the fiasco that ensures, wouldn't you be afraid of being mistaken as the active shooter by the police? It seems generally they're pretty trigger-happy..

(Again, not to start a political thread about this, I'm just simply curious, coming from a country where we can't carry guns.)

It also escalates the situation from one where an individual was just using the gun as a show of force but didn't intend to use it, to one where guns are now being discharged in a high stress and crowded environment. The vast majority of "using" a gun by criminals is just brandishing the gun to scare other people.
In most of the recent cases I've seen, a citizen with a concealed carry was either involved or in the direct area as the event took place. Far before any police (unless they were also on sight) could arrive. By that time, hopefully the situation is disarmed and the police arrive to sort out the details. If I were in that situation, (God willing I never am) I would only draw my weapon if there were no police officers present.
Walmart has the right to ban open carry from its stores. If you want to open carry anyway, don't be surprised when you get arrested.
