Ask HN: Why is there a no standard way to implement localization?
On one hand, Google allows you to add multiple payment profiles to your account which essentially allows you to change your country. This is necessary before making any purchases in USD. On the other hand, stuff like YouTube and Google Maps, for example, already show me content specific to US (Trending) without me changing my country. YouTube also allows you to buy and view shows, but that is linked to payment and as such the profile. So, Google is essentially handling some stuff using IP and others by giving us a toggle to change the profile and the linked country.
Apple, on the other hand, maybe due to their different business model and products, only gives you a switch to change your country. It essentially treats the country linked to your Apple Id as the country according to which all of your content should be, be it payments, maps, app store and all.
My question is for companies who do this kind of hybrid solutions which are half-assed and borderline confusing. Any non tech savvy person will get confused very easily. Luckily, I do understand some of these nuances but I am still unable to figure out the real justification of what is right and why they are doing what they are doing? Can you please shed some light on this?
