How are folks gets multiple offers for software engineer positions??

This is for the folks who interview well and have succeeded in getting multiple offers.I have about 15 years experience in database related roles ( admin/developer/architect/engineer). I've kept my skill set updated. I get a decent amount of interview calls, but have been having a hard time in both the phone and onsite interviews. I can communicate well ( used to do speech/debate in school). What, if anything should I be focusing on? What was your strategy? How did you prepare?
