Ask HN: Why does “The Conversation” reject authors not on their list?

A main point on their website says "We believe in open access and the free-flow of information."

When I applied to become an author I was rejected because I was not on their list of institutions. I have a good publication record and I do a lot of research in my current position.

My question is why?
