Ask HN: How to share code execution between competitors?

Suppose that several competitors in the same industry decide to share the ownership of some commodity software (e.g. the insurances industry).

How can we be sure that the code agreed upon is the one that is running? How to verify and audit this running software?

I know that this can be done with smart contracts, but I want to know what else is out there.
