Ask HN: How to prepare financially for time off / self employment?

I'd like to take some time off my bigco engineering gig, maybe 6 months or so. I'd like to try my hand at contracting for a bit after/during that, and see if I can support myself being self employed.

I live in the bay and have a mortgage, but a pretty decent amount of savings. How would you prepare financially for time off?
