The commit message title misses the point: “virgins” is quite clearly a noun in that context, but the original report was about the singular “virgin” partly in regard to “virgin” being incorrectly used as an adjective where presumably virginal would be correct.

Of course, it also happens to be a needlessly provocative word to use.

And yes, changing virgin to empty / pristine / default / unchanged may seem like political correctness gone mad, but there’s no reason to use language that sensitive people would find controversial when one does not need to.
