This is past click bait and in the territory of straight up lying. The actual article talks about youtube videos of surgery increasing, which makes sense. Good doctors listen to audio, watch videos and read papers all the time.

No one is only watching a video and then yoloing their way through a surgery. I have sat and watched surgery videos with a surgeon before. It is supplemental, exactly as you would expect. There are tight regulations in place for these things already.

This is terrible scare journalism and pretty fucking shameful.

I imagine that the most likely case is doctors watching how other doctors do it, perhaps to see if there's a small change to reduce scarring or something. Or maybe it's just been awhile since they did that specific surgery and they wanted to make sure they hadn't forgotten something.

When I go to a doctor, I'm not paying them to know everything off the top of their head, I'm paying them because they know what to look for and where to look. Likewise, I don't get paid as a developer because I know everything, I get paid because I can deliver results, and sometimes that involves some research.

I am 100% ok with surgeons watching YouTube surgery videos, especially for less common operations. In fact, I expect them to rewatch something before doing a surgery they haven't done in a while.

Even thinking youtube is being used primarily for review when someone is out of practice isn't really the most calibrated way to think of it from what I have seen. It's more about new technologies like sophisticated robotics or edge cases and outliers. Conferences, papers, audio and presentations are all part of the continuous education on these topics. If something is crucial there is probably more direct mentoring and gradual responsibility going on.
