Predictably, lots of replies stating that remote workers outside the area are good too. As someone who works remotely outside the Bay area, I certainly would agree, but that is different than the point PG is making.
People get testy about this issue, which is kind of silly because empirically a huge portion of top companies come from there. So, ya know, something is working. And, to boot, working well enough that the extra cost is worth it.
