Ask HN: Successful transition from a software engineer to a data scientist?

I finished a 2 year MSc from an Ontario university in Data science. I have about 10 years of experience as a software engineer. I'm wondering if anyone with a similar profile has successfully transitioned to a Data Science position? Importantly, were you able to keep your same level of seniority/pay?
